I was sitting in the stands last night for the King's Royal and heard the track announcer say something I never came CLOSE to hearing before.

He told the fans in attendance that for all fans heading South on Highway 118 after the race, the local county police would be setting up sobriety check points along the way.

"So drink responsibly."

I sat there thinking....... why would he say that?  Now, all the guys drinking hard would head North.  Is it a decoy?  Would the cops be setting up North of the track?

Did he say it a la Monty Python to tip off the fans?  You know - Nudge, nudge.  Know what I mean?  Say no more.  Nod.  Wink.

Was he saying it to keep the rowdiness down at the race?

Or was he being legit and looking out for all?

Anyways, post race, I hit the road heading South.  I get into Rossburg, and sure enough. red and blue lights everywhere up ahead.  I am waiting at the only light in town, and it is red.  There are about a dozen cars in front of me.

The light turns green and everyone in front of me turns either right or left and heads for Plan B!

Having played it cool all night long, I went straight ahead and never got a look.

An interesting announcement nonetheless, though.  Never heard anything of the sort before.

Great place that Eldora.

Nothing against having a good time, but anyone that's been to many Kings Royals has a drunk story or two or three or four to tell. Thank goodness I spend most of my time in the pits.

Jim, I went Friday night. Hadn't been in a while because of the drunken fools encountered in the past.

I spent most of the day in the pits (man it was hot down there). Then I went up to watch the racing from high in the turn one open bleachers. Much cooler and the crowd in that area seemed pretty calm, with lots of families around. Ten years ago I didn't think that would be possible.
