From the spartan web page
Spartan is pleased to announce that there will be 10-12 Wingless Sprint shows scheduled for the 2010 season. The Sprints will be scheduled on Late Model off nights and will be Friday night shows.
This decision has been based on the level of interest of the potential drivers (some arm twisting) also took place. We will post more information soon, once we get the details sorted out but I wanted to get this information out as soon as possible in order for drivers/owners/crews to make plans.
We will put a Sprint section on the information page of the web site that will include details pertaining to the Spartan Wingless Sprints.
There have been many people helping with this decision and I would like to thank them all. I am also reasonably certain that we will all be pleasantly surprised.

I received a message from Jim Leasure today. $600 to win and $200 to start. I'm glad the start money was better than I hoped it was, but we're racing for sportsman money (sprint cars aren't street stocks, I've beaten that horse to death).
I guess if there is a group of drivers that wants to race for that we'll cover it. Spartan's going to send us info and I'll have Mudclodbob go out and take pictures of their massive new grandstands when they start go up.
I never thought I'd see a weekly pavement track with sprint cars in Michigan.

Spartan used to run Friday and Saturday every week with Fridays featuring supermodifieds/sprint cars. I went there sometimes on Fridays and usually Capital City Speedway or Berlin on Saturdays.
It will be pretty cool to see open wheel cars there weekly. Good luck to all involved.

This is very good news. I think we all agree. It would be nice to see the payout a little bigger, but all in all, very good news. I, for one, will be there to see it happen.

I think we'll eventually see some more pavement sprint car news that is more on the positive side of the division rather than a group willing to run for sub-par purses in hopes of keeping other teams away. I'm glad Spartan has sprint cars, I'm just not into regressing instead of progressing.

I'm showing my age, but I remember that in 1969-1970, the Supermodifieds ran for $1000 to win every week at Delaware Speedway. It's unbelievable that 40 years later, we're talking about $600 to win .... and attracting interest of racers. However, I'll be there to check it out .... if they can attract 15 cars on a regular basis.

SOD payout is $1200 to win, $500 for 5th, $300 for 10th and $250 to start. If you don't make the show you get $100 tow.

thanks dirt racer for the reply
show me the track that pays 600 for sportsman. not around here.
maybe all the ones that have these great ideas about payouts should buy or lease a track and pay what they want. then we can see how easy it is in this economy to do so.
if a promoter wnats to cancel a show, or pay what they can afford so be it.
that is not a bad payoff to start with at spartan. i will support this and hope others will as well.

Or we can just compare them to other race tracks an call it like we see it....

In an effort to focus on the good, Jim Leisure at Spartan Speedway posts a purse on their website for the world to see, and he sticks to it... one way or another, and pays in folding cash at the end of the night. In terms of a purse that you can count on there are few as trustworthy as the group at Spartan. Probably the best or close to it that I've raced for.
That said, they are running a business and not prepared to take a huge gamble on sprints. I can appreciate the shrewdness of this purse, in that regard. I'm hoping that the crowd response is good, which it sounds like it will be, and they can get the feedback that they need to raise the purse. (at least that's what was said at the first meeting, I didn't attend the most recent, because I don't plan on running there)
I know I'll go on my off nights to watch, probably buy a pitpass, and donate to the cause. If this were $1000 to win, and $250 to start I would be putting a car together right now.
The nice thing about spartan is that its easy on tires and motors but hard on bumpers. (at least in other divisions) The other track (Springport) may take a little more smoke and promote a little more wear. (but it's a damn fun track)

WHAT A JOKE!It's plain to see that the promoters at Spartan are desperate to get something for nothing. This proposed purse is a slap in the face to sprintcar owners everywere. That money won't begin to pay for pavement tires, and fuel even if you win every week.

My point was not to say that this is purse structure is good or bad, just that it's quite remarkable that purses have evolved in this way. One could argue that it shows strength, in that those involved in the industry (both the promoters and the competitors) are flexible enough to keep the sport going with a very different business model than 40 years ago. In the end, this is truly a free market and the promoters, competitors and fans will vote with their $'s.

1. I'm not sure that's such a fair statement since this whole deal was started by racers that approached the track. 2. I agree, but I don't live that close to the track like some of these guys do.
